At least 11 firearms have been surrendered in the Rift region.

The Rift Valley region police commander, Edward Mwamburi said the firearms were surrendered in various police stations.

“Several civilian firearm holders who did not turn up for firearm vetting exercise have surrendered,” said Mr Mwamburi.

Mwamburi said the firearms and several rounds of ammunition have been handed over to the ballistic unit in Nairobi for examination.

He, however, said he did not have the exact number of unvetted guns

“The vetting was done by the ballistics unit. The response to the directive to surrender unvetted firearms is however good,” he said.

On Monday, police officers collected four guns from residence of a former military officer.

Last week, four firearms and 108 rounds of ammunition belonging to a former MP were also surrendered. The former MP is said to have held the firearms for the past 46 years.

Police say they expect more guns to be surrendered.
