Homa Bay man killed for robbing riders of motorbikes

Residents of Sindo in Homa Bay County on Sunday lynched a man suspected to be a mastermind of motorbike theft in the area.

Billy Obong’o’s murder came after he was accused of robbing a rider of his motorbike at Day bridge near Sindo town on Wednesday last week.

The rider raised an alarm but Obong’o was said to have disappeared with the motorbike.

He was later reported to have relocated to an unknown place after the incident.

And when he was spotted at Sindo Township on Sunday, a mob accosted him and attacked him as they interrogated him to reveal where he took the motorbike and the people he had been colluding with in theft.

The suspect mentioned eight residents whom he accused of being members of his gang that has been robbing riders of their motorbikes.

The mob decided to pounce on him with the crude weapons and killed him on the spot.

His body was set on a fire which burnt it beyond recognition.

“The deceased revealed to the mob eight people who have been collaborating with him to perpetrate robbery here. The eight have also disappeared to unknown places,” said John Kisiara, chairman of Sindo traders.

Suba South Sub County Police Commander Richard Cheruiyot confirmed the incident, saying his officers rushed to the scene and found that the deceased had been killed.

He warned residents against taking the law into their hands by lynching suspects

“Let them report suspects to the police or any security official instead of killing them,” said Cheruiyot.

The body was taken to Suba South Sub County Hospital mortuary.
