Rift Valley police commander Edward Mwamburi has called on illegal firearms owners to surrender them before government launches forceful disarmament in the region.

He said illegal guns were to blame for high cases of cattle rustling.

Speaking at Mtelo hall in Kapenguria after a security meeting with top police officers from Turkana, West Pokot and Trans Nzoia, Mr Mwamburi noted that the government had given a seven-day ultimatum to illegal gun owners to surrender, failure to which they will face dire consequences.

He asked all gun holders to visit the police station for vetting saying some arms were not properly registered when the certificates were issued.

"In our region we have received  two civilians who have surrendered the fire arms and the certificates.  They were caught out of the period that the vetting was in place.  In north rift region we have three G3 riffles which were surrendered in Elgeyo Marakwet by illegal owners“he said.
