Motorists escape death narrowly after trucks burst into flames

A group of motorists escaped death narrowly after two oil tankers were involved in a head-on-collision along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway before bursting into flames.

During the early morning incident near Marula farm in Naivasha, a driver of one of the tankers was seriously injured but rescued before catching fire.

The accident caused a major traffic snarl up that stretched for over two kilometres on both sides of the road before fire fighters from Naivasha sub-county managed to contain the fire.

It occurred after the driver of one of the tanker that was heading to Nakuru from Naivasha decided to overtake a fleet of vehicles.

A witness, Tom Mbugua said that the trailer ended up ramming into an oncoming tanker.

Mbugua added that the occupants of the trailer heading to Nakuru managed to escape while one occupant in the other tanker was left trapped.

“A few minutes after the crash, the tankers that were ferrying diesel burst into flames. It’s by good luck that fire fighters had arrived and managed to put out the fire and rescue the trapped driver,” he said.

Naivasha OCPD Samuel Waweru confirmed the incident adding that the injured driver had suffered leg fractures but in stable condition when checked in at the Naivasha Sub-County hospital.

“The fire was contained in time and the flow of traffic resumed. The wreckage has been towed to Naivasha Police Station,” he said.
