Mubea fights off 'mafia' charges at EACC

Outgoing Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) Deputy Chief Executive Michael Mubea is battling accusations of bad leadership at the agency.

Mr Mubea (pictured), who was appearing before the Defence and Foreign Relations Committee of the National Assembly, is accused of acting like a "mafia" at EACC.

He was being vetted following his nomination as the ambassador for Ireland.

MPs accused him of being behind the ineffectiveness at EACC. They said it was him who oversaw shoddy investigations that led to a poor conviction rate of corruption suspects.

The MPs asserted that as the Deputy CEO, and the face of the investigations, he should carry the blame for the commission's failures.

Yatta MP Charles Kilonzo bluntly told Mubea that within EACC circles, he was referred to as a mafia don.

“Why is it that all these allegations are specifically directed at you? It would appear that this appointment is a move by the Government to get you out of EACC," said Mr Kilonzo.

Mubea was particularly questioned on why the Commission on Administrative Justice found him guilty of irregularly drawing two salaries.

While defending himself, he said: "Those charges were malicious. It was a case of corruption fighting back."
