Narok is well prepared for Madaraka Day fete: Tunai

President Uhuru Kenyatta today met Narok County leaders at State House Nairobi ahead of Madaraka Day celebrations which will be held at Narok Stadium.

Preparations for this year’s Madarak Day celebrations are in top gear.

Speaking in his office yesterday a day after he led MPs and government bureaucrats to brief President Uhuru Kenyatta on the progress so far, an upbeat Narok Governor Samuel Tunai said all was set.

“We are ready to welcome the President and his guests to Narok County… all is well set and we look forward to the big day on Saturday,” said the political head of the county, renowned for the world famous Masai Mara Game Reserve, the wildebeest migration and the Maa culture.

In a week’s time, on June 1, Uhuru will lead the country in marking the day the country attained self-governance 56 years ago.

The Jubilee administration abandoned tradition in 2016 by moving the venues of two of the three national days outside Nairobi.

Only Jamhuri Day is marked in the capital city. Nakuru, Kakamega, Machakos and Nyeri have hosted Madaraka and Mashujaa Days.

Narok grabbed the opportunity to host this year’s event after neighbouring Kajiado experienced infrastructural challenges.

The event will be at Narok Stadium, which received a Sh300 million make-over from the county government in 2016.

Besides the bragging rights, given the attention that hosting a national day brings, the host town gets a massive face-lift that is coordinated by the national and county governments.

Narok town has been spruced up; buildings in the town have received a fresh coat of paint, more street lights have been erected, while potholes on major roads have been fixed.

Moreover, traders are readying to reap from the windfall from the increased human traffic.

Traders have restocked on fast moving commodities as they ready for the multitudes that will turn out for the occasion.

What is more, domestic tourists will enjoy free access to the Masai Mara park known for the 8th Wonder of the World- the wildebeest migration- courtesy of the county government as part of the celebrations to mark Madaraka Day.
