Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu granted Sh500, 000 anticipatory bail

Governor Ferdinand Waititu has obtained an anticipatory bail of Ksh.500, 000.

The High Court in Kiambu approved Waititu’s application for anticipatory bail after the Governor was arrested by anti-graft detectives.

The bail was granted by Magistrate Bryan Khaemba after an affidavit was presented to the court by Waititu’s lawyer Ashiolya Biko.

This means that Watitu cannot be locked up and instead shall be escorted to a police station by his lawyer where he will be informed of what led to his arrest.

“Any party served with this order and disobeys the same or any part thereof shall be guilty of contempt of court and liable to fine or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months or both,” read the order.

Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu was on Thursday arrested and taken to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission offices for questioning over corruption allegations in Kiambu County.

According to a statement by EACC Chief Executive Officer Twalib Mbarak, the commission was investigating Waititu for the irregular award of tenders valued at Sh588 million to companies associated with Waititu and his immediate family.

Mbarak said preliminary investigations showed that contractors paid money to senior county officials, their companies or relatives through proxies. 

He said investigations will also cover the fraudulent acquisition of public funds, conflict of interest and money laundering.
