City hotelier questioned after losing two pistols

A hotelier was on Sunday questioned after he told the police that thieves stole his two pistols from his hotel along Lenana Road in Nairobi.

The owner of Osteria Del Chianti Restaurant told the police he lost his two Ceska pistols loaded with 30 bullets.

The incident is said to have happened on Saturday night. He said both weapons were inside a bag that he had been carrying, but then placed on a table. The hotelier is a licensed gun holder.

Detectives from Kilimani Police Station visited the scene and questioned the Italian businessman and his workers.

The police said they are yet to establish those who stole the weapons.

“We don’t know why he was moving with two weapons. Efforts to trace them are ongoing,” said Kilimani police boss Michael Muchiri.

The Government vetted licensed gun holders in Nairobi, which saw dozens of weapons seized after they were found to have been improperly issued to civilians.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i revealed that some of the confiscated weapons include semiautomatic guns designed for the military, which are prohibited for civilians.

The Firearms Licensing Board arrived at the decision after thorough vetting of 4,000 gun owners. The vetting is continuing in other parts of the country.
