Governor Cyprian Awiti has been told to sack his Sports executive Fredrik Odero over graft. (Standard)
Homa Bay County Assembly has recommended the sacking of a county executive for allegedly embezzling Sh9.6 million allocated for county sports tournament.

The MCAs have accused Sports and Tourism county executive Fredrik Odero of allegedly misusing Sh9.6m meant for sports tournament.

During the passage of the motion last Friday, MCAs also accused Odero of incompetence, gross misconduct and abuse of office.

In a report tabled by Rusinga MCA Okuku Miregi, the Ward Reps want Governor Cyprian Awiti to sack Odero with immediate effect.

“The executive has engaged in gross abuse of office hence cannot serve the people of Homa Bay. We direct the governor to dismiss him,” said Miregi.

The MCAs gave the governor till this week to send Odero homefailure to which they take unspecified measures.

In a unanimous decision, the MCAs want another competent individual to be appointed to head the sports docket.

“We need sanity in the county hence we cannot allow Odero to continue holding the office after embezzling millions of public funds,” said Richard Ogindo, Chief Whip.

In the MCAs’ approvals, each of the 40 wards was allocated Sh240,000, but Odero is reported to have changed the allocation from Sh240,000 to Sh45,000 per ward.

Odero is also accused of sidelining ward administrators who were supposed to handle the funds and instead, appointed strangers to handle the funds.

“It is wrong for the executive to appoint strangers to handle public funds. This is incompetence and abuse of office,” said Miregi.

Wang’ Chieng’ Ward MCA Peter Kaula and his Kendu Bay Town counterpart Maurice Ogwang’ said the executive failed to defend himself when he appeared before the assembly committee on Sports and that of Powers and Privates.

“It was established that the executive presented fake minutes on a meeting they allegedly attended on how money for the tournament was going to be spent,” Kaula said.
