Reliable sources inside the barracks however told The Standard Mutai, who had been on leave, sneaked into the base at around 2am, took a gun and walked to where Kimutai was on guard duties.

Mutai is said to have found Kimutai off-guard and opened fire, killing him instantly. He is then said to have turned the weapon on himself.

On Sunday evening, Department of Defence spokesman Bogita Ongeri confirmed the deaths and added that investigations were ongoing.
