Five arrested over chief, police office murders

Five people were on Thursday arraigned in a Chuka court in Tharaka Nithi County to face a charge of murdering a local chief and a police boss.

Gerald Njeru, Cecilia Katora Rochianga, Peter Karani, Julius Mburu Kinanga and Leah Muthoni Ngige appeared before Magistrate Rachael Kahara to answer to a charge of murdering Kamaindi Location Chief Japhet Mayau and Chuka Police Station commander Joseph Kinyua.

The five were detained as the police work to complete investigations.

The chief was hacked to death when a section of residents reportedly upset with him and his brother set upon him in the Igambangómbe sub-county.

Mr Kinyua was also killed on Wednesday as he went to the area to investigate the incident.

It was reported that some people attacked Mr Kinyua as he responded to the chief’s murder

But the prosecution on Thursday pleaded with the magistrate to give 15 days to complete investigations, as they intend to add more charges.

The death of the police officer at Kamaindi as he led a team to arrest the chief’s killers has shocked the local community.

A police source said he was in the process of making an arrest when a suspect summoned a mob which in turn set upon him.

As the officer was being hacked, his colleagues shot in the air to disperse the mob.

The police report said a suspect was seriously injured in the incident and was taken to hospital.

Mr Kinyua was pronounced dead on arrival at Tenri Hospital in Embu County.
