Nominated MCA arrested for threatening woman, 22

An Elgeyo Marakwet Ward rep was on Saturday questioned by police in connection to death threats to a 22-year-old woman.

The nominated MCA Saturday, was questioned for more than four hours at Eldoret Central Police station. She is believed to have used an unregistered sim card to issue death threats to Florence Jepkemoi, a graduate of Laikipia University for close to ten months.

The complainant, in a statement recorded on Friday last week, accused the MCA of sending her text messages and calling her since mid last year, demanding that she stops a love affair with her male cousin who is a politician in the county.

She revealed to police that the Jubilee nominated MCA further concealed her identity in the unregistered SIM by sticking to a “mulika mwizi”  and avoiding Smart phone.

“She (the MCA) wrote countless abusive text messages calling me a hopeless gold digger. She threatened to kill me if I don’t leave her cousin alone. I am now depressed and scared,” she told the police.

The complainant confessed of knowing the male politician in question, but denied having a love affair with him.

She recorded that she had reported the threats in December last year, but DCI officers were unable to establish the owner of the sim card.

“I tried to search the number through True Caller. I went to an extent of sending money to the phone line but it did not display name of the recipient. I initially thought I was being threatened by criminals only to discover on Friday that my tormentor was an MCA,” she wrote.

Yesterday, the victim’s family led by her brother James Kosgei told The Standard that the family was not taking the threats lightly.

Kosgei expressed fears that the MCA “marked” his sister’s house in Eldoret and “might hurt her”.

“We are meeting today (yesterday) as a family to review the threats and find ways of seeking justice for my sister,” Kosgei said.

Eldoret West OCPD Zacharia Bitok declined to comment on the matter, but a detective privy to the case said the suspect avoided using a smart phone, making it difficult for DCI officers to locate her, until less than a month ago when she put the unregistered sim card in an Elgeyo Marakwet County Assembly tablet allocated to her.

The insertion of the card on the assembly tablet, the detective said helped investigators trace the suspect’s location and personal details including her identity and email.
