A privately owned hospital in Migori was raided on Thursday and a body taken away.

Goons allegedly led by Ragana Oruba MCA Malan Ogega stormed the facility.

Ogega denied the claims, saying he was unaware of such an incident.

“It was just a coincidence. I went to the hospital to view the man's body since he comes from my ward. By the time the commotion started I was away," he said.

Ledmonton Pete, the General Manager at St Akidiva Memorial Hospital in Suna West, said a group of youth armed with crude weapons raided the hospital.

“They came in at around 9.15am. They just pushed the gate and forced entry. Some jumped over the fence," Pete said.

He added that the youth rang bells, disturbing patients at the hospital, threatening to beat up the staff.

“They took the stretcher, went in the morgue and carried the body away. They put in a truck and threw away the stretcher," Pete said.

He added that he called the police but they arrived late.

“During that time, eight patients who were almost being discharged escaped through the crowd without paying medical bills. The hospital has lost a lot of money from the incident," Pete said.

He said the man whose body was stolen was brought in on Wednesday and died the same day.

Hospital proprietor Dr Aggrey Idagiza said the group wanted the body transferred to another morgue.

"We are counting loses because the eight patients who had surgery owed the hospital between Sh1 million and Sh2 million," Idagiza said.

The matter was reported to the police.
