Man denies killing girlfriend and throwing her in gold mine

A 28-year-old man was on Wednesday charged with murdering his girlfriend and disposing her body in a pit that was mined for gold.

Obed Ihaji was accused of killing Carolyne Mukutu between March 2 and 3 at their home in Bukhananga village, Kakamega South.

The suspect, who appeared before High Court Judge Jesse Njagi, denied the charge.

Ihaji is said to have been seen with Mukutu on March 2 at the nearby Matioli shopping centre where they were drinking before they were dropped at home by a boda-boda rider.

Two days later, neighbours discovered the woman’s body inside a pit situated in Ihaji’s family land and just 20 metres from his house. They arrested Ihaji and handed him over to the police.

An autopsy report revealed that the tongue had been removed, eyes gouged out and ears chopped off.

Ihaji was granted a Sh500,000 bond with a surety of similar amount. The case will be heard on June 11.
