When President Uhuru Kenyatta launched the mass registration for Huduma Namba on Tuesday at Masii, Machakos County, he made it clear that the process was not a choice but compulsory for everyone.

Contrary to the court order which insinuated that no one was to be forced to provide personal information, many Kenyans seemed to heed  the call owing to the fact that both government officials and opposition leaders swung into action at  various parts of the country to spearhead the launch, an act never seen before in the history of this country.

But as government officials strive to mobilise the public to heed to the calls what exactly is it needed for biometric registration?

What you need

In an interview with KTN NEWS BIG STORY on February 20, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government of Kenya, Karanja Kibicho, said that among the myriad of documents that will be used for registration includes birth certificate, driving licence, ID and even passport.

Those with NHIF, NSSF and KRA cards will also have the  information included in the same Huduma Namba

According to the PS, children aged above six years will be suitable for biometric registration owing to the fact that they are old enough to begin their school life.

Karanja said these documents will be consolidated to generate a specific Huduma Namba that will be used as a single source of truth about a person.

The fact that registration is scheduled to take 45 days does not mean that after the expiry of the period no registration will be done.

The said the over 31,500 biometric kits will be left with the Assistants Chiefs, who will use the kit to undertake updates of more information about, births, marriage, deaths and any other important updates about a person.

Considering the President Uhuru's speech during the launch of Huduma Namba, the government intend to use the Huduma Namba in planning for its service delivery process, including eliminating fraud and channelling resources to the elderly, children, people living with the disability, members of proposed housing fund, farmers as well as small and medium enterprises.
