House Committee approves Magoha's nomination

A parliamentary vetting committee has approved the nomination of George Magoha (pictured)  as Education Cabinet Secretary.

The House Committee on Appointments chaired by National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi tabled its report for consideration by the National Assembly.

House Minority Leader John Mbadi (Suba South) submitted the report and recommendations following committee hearings held with the Prof Magoha on Thursday last week.

The House is scheduled consider the committee's recommendations today.

“Having conducted the approval hearing for the nominee, the committee recommends that this House approves the appointment of Prof George Albert Omore Magoha as Cabinet Secretary for Education by the President of Kenya,”stated the committee.

When he appeared before the 28-member committee, Magoha said he was best placed to steer the operations of the Education ministry citing his experience.

The committee observed that Magoha exhibited substantial knowledge on matters education and has experience in public service.

On integrity, the committee found that the nominee has not been dismissed or otherwise removed from office for contravening the provisions of Article 75 of the Constitution.

On his sources of income and statement of net worth, Magoha informed the Committee that variations in his sources of income between 2018 and 2019 could be attributed to annual reviews on lease agreements.

He gave a breakdown of his approximate net worth of Sh250 million.

Magoha’s career began with an internship at Lagos University Teaching Hospital in 1978. In 1988 he was employed as a lecturer in the department of surgery at the University of Nairobi. He rose to become the VC of the university between 2005 and 2015 and currently chairs the Kenya National Examinations Council.
