Thugs rob an Mpesa shop, throws grenade at police

NAIROBI, KENYA: Police have arrested suspects linked to robbery of an Mpesa shop in Nairobi’s Huruma estate

The five had attempted to attack the policeofficers with a hand grenade in the Monday incident

The gang had stolen unknown amount of money from the shop and was escaping when they bumped onto police on patrol.

The officers chased the gang, which was riding on three motorbikes up to near Thika Road where they threw a grenade at the officers but did not explode. They are under interrogation, Nairobi police boss Philip Ndolo said.

Meanwhile, all police officers attached to Shauri Moyo police station, Nairobi have been moved over various complaints from the public and crime surge.

The more than 50 officers were ordered to leave to their new stations by February 27. This follows complaints of harassment by the public and crime surge in the area.

A new team has taken over their duties in the new shake up. Officials explained the move by Deputy Inspector General of police Njoroge Mbugua followed an incident in which a civilian was shot and seriously injured in a mistaken identity in the area.

Officers on the ground allegedly tried to cover up the incident saying the victim had tried to rob a female officer of her gun.

There have also been complaints from locals some officers at the station harass and extort money from them.
