Group wants investigations into the death of a man in police custody

A human rights lobby group wants the Director of Public Prosecutions to order investigations into the death of a man at Kampi Samaki Administration Police camp.

Nakuru County Human Rights Network, in a letter, asked the DPP to establish an independent team to investigate the death of David Otieno alias Scorpion Man.

David Kuria, an official, said the police officers in the area could not be trusted to investigate the matter as they had already made conclusions about it.

Mr Kuria took up the case after members of Mr Otieno's family members visited his office to seek help.

Otieno's wife, Alice Akiru, and three other family members alleged a cover-up.

Ms Akiru said the police had declined to issue the family with a copy of an autopsy report conducted on the body of her husband on December 18.

Otieno was allegedly beaten and arrested after a woman reported that he was a nuisance.

Baringo AP Commander Robinson Ndiwa said the man, who was locked in the cells for being drunk and disorderly, was later found dead.
