From political hot spot to peace haven: Kondele's big about turn as Uhuru Visits

At the height of political violence in 2007 and 2017, Kondele area in Kisumu was a no-go zone. Over the years, the area has earned the reputation of being a political violence hot spot.

This was in stark contrast to yesterday’s mammoth crowd that turned up to welcome erstwhile political foes, President Uhuru Kenyatta, Opposition leader Raila Odinga and Deputy President William Ruto.

The crowd cheered Uhuru, Raila and Ruto when they made a stopover at Kondele yesterday afternoon, bringing business to a standstill.

When they spoke, none of the leaders mentioned any possible compensation to the families of many youths who died or were injured in the confrontation with the police.

Despite Raila’s request to the crowd to allow his entourage to drive on without making speeches, the crowds demanded to be addressed by Uhuru and Ruto.

“I know you want to hear us speak. But I invite you to Mamboleo to listen to us more,” said Raila.

The crowd would, however, hear none of it. When he spoke, Uhuru told the enthusiastic crowds he was in Kisumu on the invite of Raila.

“Sisi tumekuja hapa kwa mwaliko wa Baba (We have come here on the invitation of Raila),” he said.

Goodies of handshake

“We have brought the goodies of the handshake and to extend the gospel of peace, love and unity, as is emboldened in the national anthem, to you,” he said.

He rallied residents to support his newfound friendship with Raila.

“We beseech you to support the handshake. Soon you will see its dividends,” the President said.

When he finished speaking, the crowd started chanting Ruto’s name. Chants of Ruto and “hustler” rent the air. The DP’s speech was brief.

“Kondele hamjambo. Sasa wadosi wameshaongea sasa mimi Hustler niseme nini. Sina lakusema. (Greetings Kondele! Now that the bosses have spoken, what do I say?) Thank you,” he said amid applause.

The President said the leaders were focused on unity and development for the common good of all Kenyans.
