Hyena attacks woman along Mombasa Road

A woman was this week attacked by a hyena along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway as she was relieving herself.

According to a police incident report, Esther Sammy had alighted from a truck at around 1 am on Monday, July 30, 2018, when she came face to face with a hyena which gouged out her left eye.

The incident took place near Tsavo East National Park and police on patrol in the area said they heard loud screams which prompted them to act.

Sammy also sustained deep cuts on her left hand and was rushed to Makindu Hospital for treatment.

Cases of human-wildlife conflict around Tsavo are not new but rarely have hyenas attacked human beings.

In many other places across the country, drying rivers that run through natural animal sanctuaries force conflicts between animals from the wild and human beings as the former venture out in search of food and water.

Most cases involve elephants destroying crops and once in a while, lions stray and attack livestock.

Authorities have since cautioned drivers against making random stops near bushes as animals looking for prey might pounce.
