Amina: We are not to blame for late cash transfer to schools

The Ministry of Education has denied that it is to blame for the delayed disbursement of free secondary school education funds.

The delay has prompted some principals to close their schools early for the August holidays.

Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed (pictured) said the late disbursement was because of discrepancies between the Government's financial year and the school calendars.

“The school year and the financial year are overlapping,” said Amina, adding that the ministry was revising disbursement phases to ease the financial crisis in schools.

Usually, the cash is released in percentages of 50 for first term, 30 for second and 20 at the end of the school year.

“We are revising the disbursement so we can release more than 50 per cent in first term, 20 per cent in second and 30 in the last term. We hope with this arrangement this will never happen again.”

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers called on school principals to close their schools after the Government failed to release Sh6 billion meant for the second term.

Secretary General Akello Misori said there was no need to keep students in school without the cash.
