Hosts retain Victoria Cup after third consecutive victory.
Defending Champions and hosts Kenya proved their dominance after beating their traditional rivals Uganda to clinch the 2018 Victoria cup trophy during the end of the golf champion ship played at the par 72 Vet lab course in Nairobi on Saturday.
Team Kenya produced an excellent total of 19.5 points against Uganda’s 6.5 points to retain the trophy for the third year running.
Team Kenya Captain Edwin Mudanyi attributed the victory to discipline and hard work instilled by Coach Ali Kimani.
“I would like to thank our current Coach, Ali Kimani for tirelessly working with us to ensure that we were well prepared for the tournament. Although we have defeated Uganda thrice in a row, we did not under-estimate the Uganda team. Hence, we trained hard to ensure that we were at our best during this year’s tournament,” he said.
The three days tourney started off on Thursday with Kenya beating Uganda 4-0, then won on Friday by a total of 5.5 points against Uganda’s 2.5 points before sealing Uganda’s fate on Saturday with 6 points against 4 points to clinch the trophy donated by legendary Marathoner Moses Tanui.
The Kenya Golf Union (KGU) and the Uganda Golf Union (UGU) are playing this tourney on the Ryder Cup Format featuring a combination of foursomes, four ball better ball and singles in which each country fielded 10 teams and was jointly organized.
Team Kenya was represented by John Karichu (Limuru Country Club),Mike Kisia (Vet lab) Edwin Mudanyi (Vet Lab),Dennis Saikwa (Royal Nairobi), and Isaac Makhoha.
Others were Daniel Nduva, Paul Muchangi, Agil Is-Haq, Muthaiga’s Mutahi Kibugu, and Zubair Khan (Muthaiga).
Uganda Players included Mwanja Becca (Captain), Muhumuza Adolf, Rugumayo Ronald, Mutebi Deco and Cwinyaai Joseph.
Others are Baguma Richard, Kamulindwa David, Gaita Rodel, Ainamani Abraham and Ochaya Martin.
At the par 71 Muthaiga course, handicap 18 Gaurav Dhanani posted a countback score of 38 points to emerge the overall winner of the ongoing 7th leg of the 2018 Crown Silicon golf challenge played on Saturday.
He had tied on the same points with men winner handicap 13 J.G,.Ichara while handicap 5 Tanvir Sodi was the men runners up on 37 points.
Njeri Mugo playing off handicap 17 was the lady winner on 33 points while handicap 18 David Munge on 35 points and handicap 6 Daniel Kiragu on 34 points were the guest and Junior winners respectively.
The Crown series celebrating 60 years that kicked off at Nakuru Course on April 1st now goes to the Karen Course on August 25th while Sigona will be the host on September 1st.
It a 12th leg series that will also move to Tanzania’s Arusha Gymkhana course on 22nd September and Nyali on October 6, before going to Uganda golf course on October 27.
The grand finals that will host all the qualifies from the series will be held at Muthaiga course on November 24.
