Favourites Asumbi put titles on the line as national championships start.

Top guns Asumbi and Eregi will put their titles on the line as this year's Teachers Training Colleges games begin today at Eregi.

The Nyanza and Western Region sports powerhouses will leave nothing to chance as they battle to maintain the status quo.

Asumbi will be seeking to extend their reign while Eregi will be hoping to retain the women's handball title.

Chasing an 11th successive basketball title, the undisputed champions Asumbi seek a perfect start against hosts Eregi before taking on Moi Teachers Training College Baringo of Rift Valley in their second Group A match.

Meanwhile, Asumbi men's basketball team will be out to extend their reign to 10 years having ruled since 2009. They clash with Baringo in their opening Group A tie then face off with Kaimosi in their second preliminary match.

Asumbi basketball coach Paul Odock said their main objective at the games is to win with ease.

"We have dominated this games for years and we are not ready to relinquish our crowns. We came to defend our title and want to achieve that with emphatic victories," Odock said.

Coast's Shanzu, Kitui, Egoji and Muranga of Central will battle in Group B for a place in the men's Semi-finals.

Meru (Eastern), Shanzu and Kagumo and Thogoto of Nairobi will be seeking a top-two finish in women's Group B.

Asumbi will also be seeking to defend their men's football and women's hockey titles respectively.

Eregi, who are former women's football champions, will be out to recapture the title when they play Kagumo.

In hockey, Machakos face off with Baringo in their women's opening clash while Asumbi men take on Kagumo.
