Mathare United have temporarily returned to the top of the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) after beating Chemelil Sugar by a solitary goal yesterday, at Kenyatta Stadium, in Machakos.

On-form Cliff Nyakeya netted the lone goal on the stroke of halftime to take his season tally to four and help the Slum Boys dislodge Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards from the top.

The victory saw Mathare take their points tally to 17, one ahead of K’Ogalo who face Vihiga United today and Ingwe who will play Tusker on Monday.

Meanwhile, Gor Mahia coach Dylan Kerr has urged his players to respond from the CAF Champions League disappointment against Esperance when they host Vihiga in today’s KPL match, at Moi Stadium, Kisumu.

Despite suffering a frustrating 1-0 (1-0 on aggregate) defeat to the Tunisian giants in the return leg tie a fortnight ago, the Briton spoke of his pride at his men’s display.

He, however, challenged them to switch focus on the newcomers’ game as they prepare for next week’s Confederations Cup first leg fixture against visiting SuperSport United from South Africa.

“Champions League was a good test for the boys, but that disappointment is now behind us and we are now back to KPL.

“Vihiga is a new team, but we cannot afford to underrate them,” Kerr told The Standard Sports.

“Every team we play want to beat us, they want to show how good they are.

“We got to go there with right mentality because it won’t be easy. It will be a good preparation for the SuperSport match.

“We have trained well this week, but we must have the right attitude and desire to play against Vihiga.

“This is a very important game for us as it will give us a clear picture of how ready we are and the players who can play against Supersport next week,” he said.
