Nursing Intern facing defilement charges in hospital after failed suicide attempt

A suspect facing defilement charges is fighting for his life at Sigowet sub-county hospital in Kericho County after attempting suicide.

Twenty-five-year-old Dennis Kiplangat Bor, a nursing student at Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) at Kapkatet campus, tried to kill himself by taking a pesticide.

He reportedly injected himself with adrenaline to accelerate his death. Adrenaline is a hormone secreted by the adrenal glands and increases rates of blood circulation.

“The doctors fought so hard to save the patient’s life and the good news is he is now in stable condition,” said a source at the hospital.

On Monday, Bor was arraigned before a Kericho court where he was charged with defiling a 16-year-old Form Two student. He was released on a Sh200,000 bond.

The hospital's superintendent Ronald Langat yesterday expressed concern over high number of attempted suicides in Soin/Sigowet Constituency.

Currently recuperating

Four individuals are currently recuperating at the hospital after attempting to take their lives.

Dr Langat said they had treated and discharged 17 people, between the age of 20 and 35, who had attempted suicide in the past two months.

One person died within that period. The victim, an elderly woman, took poison.

“Most of the suicide cases we have received are organophosphate poisoning, which involve farm chemicals such as pesticides. Most of them are not accidental,” said Langat.

He said they are also worried that many primary school students are also attempting suicide.

"Two primary school pupils were treated and discharged in separate incidents last year. This is draining the hospital’s non-pharmaceuticals and antidotes, among others," said Langat.

“We need a psychiatric clinic in every health facility to curb the rising number of attempted suicide in this constituency,” he said.
