Mathare United sign Alwanga from Tusker: Former KCB midfielder reunites with coach Kimanzi

Slum Boys keen on rebuilding experienced squad ahead of new season.

After escaping Kenyan Premier League (KPL) relegation axe last season, Mathare United are now rebuilding an experienced side in a bid to do better this year.

The team has roped in former Tusker midfielder Clifford Alwanga on a two-year deal just days after bringing on board Samuel Ndung’u from AFC Leopards. Ndung’u has also been handed a two-year deal.

Alwanga was among the 14 players who were dropped by Tusker last year after a disappointing season and he has termed his recent move as an opportunity to revive his career.

“I am happy to be here because this is a chance to revive my career. I have worked with coach (Francis) Kimanzi before and I know what is expected of me,” Alwanga told the club’s website.

“My target is to get more playing time and score at least 15 goals. Hopefully I will be a top contender for the top scorer award.”

Ndung’u on the other hand is expected to fill the void left by Harrison Mwendwa who was released by Mathare United last December.

“I am happy to join Mathare United because I know I will get more playing time here. I am a big admirer of coach (Francis) Kimanzi and I am looking forward to learning a lot from him. My target is to regain my form and score as many goals as possible, “ said Ndung’u after signing for the club.

So far United, have signed five players. Apart from Alwanga and Ndung’u they have also signed Gilbert Osonga, Job Ochieng and Francis Omondi.

In other transfer news, Kariobangi Sharks have released influential midfielder Ibrahim Kitawi who has immediately been snapped up by Sofapaka.

Kitawi played a vital role in helping Sharks finish third last season, but with better and younger players joining the team this year, he asked to be released.

Kariobangi Sharks chairman Robert Maoga said the player had been released on a free transfer.

“Kitawi obviously wanted more playing time and was convinced he would not get it at Kariobangi Sharks this season and so he put in a transfer request and we obliged. We wish him the best,” Maoga said.

Before joining Sharks, Kitawi also featured for Gor Mahia, Bandari and Nakumatt, but did not make a mark.
