South Imenti MP Kathuri Murungi has said William Ruto's running mate in 2022 should come from Mt Kenya East.

Murungi said Meru County with over 700,000 voters and Tharaka Nithi with over 300,000 make a strong bloc to produce a presidential running mate.

"There is no shortage of leaders in Mt Kenya East who can confidently take up that position," he said on Thursday.

The legislator was speaking in his constituency during public consultations for Constituency Development Fund (CDF) projects.

He named Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi, Senate Deputy Speaker Kithure Kindiki, former Meru Governor Peter Munya, Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki, Meru Senator Mithika Linturi, MPs Kareke Mbiuki and Maoka Maore and himself as some of the potential candidates for Ruto's running mate in 2022.

"We should bear in mind that no one else but this region will prop our leaders for the national mantle," he said.
