Uhuru's massive inauguration budget evokes mixed reaction from Kenyans

The approaching inauguration of President-elect Uhuru Kenyatta is the talk of the day after committee chairman Joseph Kinyua announced the amount of money kept aside for the event.

Kinyua, who is also Chief of Staff of the President & Head of Public Service said that the government is to use KSh 300 million for the event scheduled for Tuesday, November 28.

According to Kinyua, the amount is justifiable since over 20 heads of state and governments have confirmed attendance including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

However, Kenyans seem to think the event is overrated and that Ksh 300 million is a mockery of the current state of the country.

Here are what most had to say;

Joseph Kinyua says President Kenyatta's swearing budget is 300M. With a maximum number of attendants in Kasarani at 100K,it simply mean each person will spend 3K. We should eat Crocodile meat, Ostrich eggs and take Uber home then order a Guinness. #MsetoFriday

What? With that 300m,are you going to buy another land to extend #kenya? Or are you going to cook food enough to feed the whole pupulation in #kenya?— cian benson (@cianbenson1) November 25, 2017

300M is a no joke....all they do,celebrate our suffering... Nurses they did not have money, lectures no money,teachers can't pay wouldn't pay....but 300m withing 1week to celebrate another period of suffering#NoMercyWithUs

Given the questionable manner of Uhuru's "win", he would have just been sworn in at night at State House with minimal cost and no foreign guests like Kibaki did in 2007 when he stole victory from Raila.Using 300 million is unnecessary and total waste of tax payers money.— RED CORNER (@J_Nenez) November 25, 2017

I feel pity for my fellow Mwananchi. Food will be skyrocketing and poor us will have to hustle real hard to put it on the table. Hospitals will have no nurses just as the past and schools no teachers ??????????????— Dottie Lovable (@dottie_lovable) November 24, 2017

Others felt that the inauguration is of big magnitude and it is okay for that amount to be spent.

Inauguration ceremonies are generally expensive. Obama's 2009 swearing in cost $170 milli. Uhuru's inauguration is just $3 milli. Be informed. Joseph Kinyua— I'm Frank (@GGichukiFrancis) November 24, 2017

Just mind your own business brothers, there is nothing we can do without competing with each other.

That amount is fair, this is a national event enshrined in the constitution... Hopeful of better times ahead— Karanja Simon (@engkaranja) November 24, 2017
