Gor Mahia crowned their 2017 season in style, despite settling for a 2-2 draw with visitors SoNy FC at Kisumu’s Moi Stadium on Saturday.
Rwandan import Meddie Kagere, scored a brace in the 26th and 32nd minute while George Abege netted in the 22nd minute and substitute Geulord Yema added the second goal for SoNy in the 71st minute to send the stadium into wild celebrations.
Excited fans who were clad in Gor’s jerseys and scarfs were in the stadium from 10am to cheer their team
Gor had already won the trophy with five founds of matches to go. A loss could still perch the 16-time KPL champions on top of the log with 73 points, leaving second-placed Sopafaka basking in 52 points.
Loose ball
Inspired by Dylan Kerr who was crowned Fidelity Insurance Coach of the Month for September on Thursday, the league leaders looked composed.
But SoNy FC dictated the proceedings up to 25th minute as Kevin Oluoch, Benjamin Mosha and Abege dovetailed well upfront with Amos Asembeka passing the crosses.
The pressure yielded in the first goal when Asembeka collected a Loose and went past Musa Muhammed and Godfrey Walusimbi and passed it to Abege who sent Gor goalkeeper Fredrick Odhiambo the wrong way.
Gor went back to the drawing board and resumed with renewed determination as they staged daring attacks. It bore fruits four minutes later as Kagere collected a fine pass from George Odhiambo for the equaliser.
Kagere was at it again six minutes later when he scored a pass from Francis Kahata in the 32nd minute. SoNy’s Hamisi Abdala was substituted for Joseph Omweri five minutes to the break. Yema was then brought in for Justine Monda in the 64th as the sugar millers piled pressure.
Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o and his Homabay counterpart Cyprian Awiti, Ronald Karauiri the SportsPesa CEO, Gor chairman Ambrose Rachier attended the match.
