Weekend club round up results: Not even strong winds could slow down Gichungu

Golfer posts 71 nett to win governor’s title at the Sea-link Mombasa course.

Maina Gichungu braved winds from the nearby Indian Ocean to beat 100 golfers and claim the Duncan Ndegwa 2017 trophy at the Mombasa golf course on Saturday evening.

Gichungu, who is handicap 9, took advantage of playing at home to post 71 nett and emerge the overall winner of the club nite event sponsored by a former Central Bank of Kenya governor, Duncan Ndegwa, who is now a hotelier at the coast.

Gichungu’s win came after sinking three rare birdies on the par three-third, the par three-12th, and the par five-14th holes.

He then added seven pars despite playing a mixed bogey shots on the rest of both nines to claim the trophy.

“After playing birdies, I knew this was going to be my event. And despite tricky pin positions, I have made it and this is the greatest moment in my career,” said Gichungu.

Nyali’s handicap 10 Jimmy Kingo’ri, on 74 nett, was the runner-up, while  home club’s handicap 19 David Ngunjiri, who had 75 nett, finished third.

At the same time, handicap 17 Charles Njui, on 42 points, won the 2017 DSTV tournament golf series at the par 72 Thika Sports Club course, while  handicap 15 Stephen Kinyanjui was the men winner on 39 points.

Jessica Kimathi, playing off handicap 36, won the lady’s title on 40 points, while handicap 5 Brain Omondi, on 35 points, was the junior winner. Handicap 22 Daniel Kamau, on 39 points, was the guest winner.

At the Par 72 Royal Nairobi Golf Club, Dorcas Munge’s team of Stephen Oundo, J.J. Masiga, and Allan Njoroge posted a combined total of 63 points to emerge the overall winners of the UAP Old Mutual-sponsored golf tournament.

The team of Flora Mutahi, Duncan Kivuitu, Hawkins Musili, and Dennis Saikwa, on 62 points, were the runners-up, while the team of Herbert Ocholi, Edgar Mokua, Richard Marisin, and Mildred Malubi, who had 61 points, were third.

At the Golf Park course, handicap 23 Nimrod Kurgat posted 65 nett to win the 2017 Unity golf tournament.

Handicap 23 Charles Kinyanjui on 66 nett, was third, while handicap 22 Maina Nduati, on 68 nett, was third.
