Obey the rule of law, president Uhuru warns leaders

President Uhuru Kenyatta has called on Kenyans to be peaceful and united ahead of tomorrow’s repeat presidential election.

Speaking to the press at State House, Nairobi on Wednesday evening, the president said all Kenyans and leaders should abide by the constitution.

He said Kenya is guided by the rule of law and it’s the responsibility of all citizens and leaders to always obey the constitution.

Uhuru assured the country that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is ready to conduct the repeat election as ordered by the Supreme Court, adding that the role of his administration is to ensure a conducive environment and security for IEBC to carry out the electoral process. He also assured security for all Kenyans during and after the repeat presidential election.

The head of state urged Kenyans to come out and exercise their democratic and constitutional right to vote when the electoral commission opens polling stations Thursday morning. He at the same time warned that nobody should interfere with each other’s right to vote since there are those who are planning to vote and those against the election.

“When all this is over we will work together to make up for the lost time. Equally we must and we will ensure that the benefits of our nation’s progress are felt by every Kenyan and our nation’s journey to becoming a modern 21^st century country gives every Kenyan the opportunity of pride and prosperity,” he said.

The president’s address to the nation came a few hours after NASA leader Raila Odinga’s declaration of forming a resistance movement and insisting the October 26 elections were unnecessary.

Addressing supporters at Uhuru Park, in Nairobi Raila urged NASA supporters to stay home on October 26 as there will be no demonstrations.

“Do not participate in any way in the sham election. Convince your friends, neighbours and everyone else not to participate. Instead, we advise Kenyans who value democracy and justice hold vigil and prayers away from polling stations,” said Raila Odinga.
