Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has warned that stern action will be taken against anyone intimidating poll officials.

Addressing regional commissioners and their county counterparts, Dr Matiang'i warned that any person found engaging in acts that would prevent registered voters from exercising their rights on October 26 will be in breach of various laws.

“For avoidance of doubt, let it be known to one and all that assault and obstruction of public officers from carrying out their lawful duties is a criminal offence under the Penal Code. It is the right of every citizen to participate or not to participate either as a voter or a candidate in an election. However, it is an offence to use force or violence to prevent another person from voting,” added Matiang’i.

He directed county administrators to firmly deal with those breaking the law and inciting Kenyans to violence.

The CS, however, warned the police to exercise restraint during and after the repeat presidential vote.

Matiang'i also directed the regional and county chiefs to ensure any group of persons or politicians who want to engage in peaceful protests fill the required form with the police before being allowed to participate in the demonstrations.

Speaking on Monday at the Kenya School of Government in Lower Kabete, the acting Interior boss assured that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) would be given adequate security to carry out its mandate.

He said the Public Order Act, the National Police Service Act and the National Government Administration Act regulate good order in the society in a manner that secures the rights of all.

Accompanied by Interior PS Karanja Kibicho and Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinett, Matiang’i warned perpetrators of violence will be dealt with.

Mr Boinett, while lauding the preparations of the repeat vote, asked the regional commissioners to ensure that they prudently manage the resources at their disposal.

He also assured the country that they had mapped hotspots in the country and that all Kenyans would be protected by security agencies.
