Wafula Chebukati’s new message to Uhuru and Raila ahead of repeat presidential poll

In a briefing at the Bomas of Kenya, Independent Electoral and Boundaries Chair Chebukati (IEBC) admitted that his job was tough and that he could not guarantee a free, fair and credible poll because of the division within the Commission.

Chebukati asked the two conflicting parties (Jubilee and the National Super Alliance –NASA) candidates to keep off the commission.

He also asked staff adversely mentioned to have committed election malpractices to resign.

“Under such conditions, it is difficult to guarantee free, fair and credible elections. Am convinced that without critical changes in key secretariat staff, we may not have free, fair and credible election. I ask the staff who have been adversely mentioned to step aside and allow the project team to function without interference,” said the Chairman.

He also said that as much as some elements desire his resignation, he was determined to make the commission work.

He recognised Akombe’s importance to the Commission, saying that she was one of the finest minds in IEBC.

Akombe resigned and left the country, sending her resignation letter from New York, USA, where she stated that the Commission was under siege and that it made her take positions she never believed in.

Chebukati said that he had planned a meeting with both NASA and Jubilee candidates, a meeting that failed to kick off this morning.
