Public health officers in Maua, Igembe South, destroyed 200kg of fish worth Sh60, 000.

The consignment was destroyed after the officers suspected that a cancer-causing chemical - formalin - was used to preserve it.

"We realised this fish from Mombasa is always fresh by the time it is reaching Meru and can even last up to one week," said Igembe South public health officer Allan Njiru.
