The Government has released Sh8.6 billion free education money to forestall a crisis that had threatened public schools.

Education PS Belio Kipsan'g said Sh6.6 billion had been disbursed to cater for 2.5 million students in 8,526 public secondary schools.

Another Sh2 billion has already been sent to 22,262 primary schools to support 8.9 million learners under the Free Primary Education programme.

He said another Sh226 million had been disbursed to primary schools under the Special Primary Schools and Units grants.

“Some Sh200 million has also been sent to low-cost boarding schools in arid and Semi-Arid regions,” Kipsan'g said.

The details come as secondary school heads raised alarm that preparation of this year’s national examinations would have been affected if the government failed to send the money.

They said salaries for support staff and suppliers are still pending and cautioned that the brewing crisis may affect running of schools.
