US issues travel alert ahead of Kenya’s repeat election

The US Department of State has issued a travel alert, warning of possible violence ahead of the October 17 repeat presidential election.

The repeat election pits President Uhuru Kenyatta against NASA leader Raila Odinga.

The department warned US residents to steer away from demonstrations and political gatherings.

"Rallies, demonstrations and protests may occur with little notice. As with all large events, there is the opportunity for criminal elements or terrorists to target participants and visitors," the department said in an alert issued on September 13.

The alert is expected to expire on October 31, 2017.

The notice stresses that even events intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence, and urged US citizens to exercise caution in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.

The department said during elections, restrictions on traffic circulation, either imposed by the authorities or caused by political rallies, will be expected.

A similar alert issued on September 8 asked US citizens to avoid visits to six counties - Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Tana River, Lamu and parts of Kilifi.

"In Mombasa, the US Embassy recommends US citizens visit Old Town only during daylight, and carefully consider whether to use the Likoni ferry due to safety concerns."
