Deejays, Bankers sail to quarters: KCB registered two convincing wins in Pool B

Homeboyz are enjoying a fine form after clinching Driftwood Sevens

National Sevens Circuit champions Homeboyz, Kenya Commercial Bank and Kabras Sugar yesterday booked their places in today’s Kabeberi Sevens quarter-finals with two group matches victories at RFUEA Grounds.

The Deejays, who recently clinched the Driftwood Sevens, continued from where they left off in Mombasa by beating hosts Mwamba 22-14 before mauling guest team Daystar Falcons 22-0 in Pool A.

Cyprian Kuto and Jeff Oluoch scored a brace of tries each to propel Homeboyz past Mwamba, who have been relegated to the Challenge Trophy for the second weekend in a row after losing their second match against Nondescripts (19-17).

Kabras defeated Strathmore 28-7 in their first Pool D match before humiliating Makueni RFC 24-0. Menengai Oilers were also in a pole position to sail through after registering wins over Blak Blad (36-7) and Catholic Monks (47-7).

Having disappointingly missed out on last weekend’s Main Cup quarter-finals, a rejuvenated KCB made a big statement by registering two convincing wins over their Pool B opponents 2015 series champions Nakuru (29-5) and Kenya Harlequin (29-0).

Ahmed Shaban scored a converted try to put KCB ahead before they were awarded a penalty try following a Quins’ infringement.

Kenyan international Jacob Ojee would race past his marker to make the scores 19-0 before Martin Owilla and Arthur Owira grounded a try each to secure a quarter-final slot for KCB with a game to spare.

Hosts Mwamba were the biggest day one casualties as they were relegated to the Challenge Trophy for the second weekend in a row.

Mwamba suffered a 22-14 defeat to Driftwood champions Homeboyz before losing 19-17 to Nondescripts in a thrilling encounter.

Steve Sikuta scored a converted try for Mwamba, but Ugandan import James Odong’ capitalised on Nondies’ numerical advantage to draw level on the stroke of half-time after Horace Otieno was sin-binned.

Mwamba regained the lead through Ronnie Omondi’s try, but Odong made a magnificent run with Marvin Sumba’s try under the posts, handing Nondies a 14-12 lead. Danield Taabu would score a third try for Mwamba, only for Odong’ to cut his celebrations short with a match winning try.

Just like the opening leg, this weekend’s round has was characterised by upsets. Kisii stunned Nakuru 14-12 as Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad shocked holders Impala 21-7 in a Pool C encounter.

The Sarries went ahead through Ian Minjire’s converted try.
