There is light at the end of the tunnel for the renovation of Kinoru Stadium in Meru County as it preps to host the 2018 African Championship (CHAN).

Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Youth and Sports to unlock the Sh892 million for the phase two refurbishment to proceed.

The refurbishing stalled after former Governor Peter Munya refused to sign the deal with the national government as he wanted it to issue money to the county directly.

However, Youths and Sports principal secretary Kirimi Kaberia said they will channel Sh892 million through Sports Kenya for the second phase refurbishment which will hopefully take two and half months.

"We have an opportunity to implement many of the promises made by the national government. When the stadium is complete it will attract investment," PS Kaberia said. Kiraitu said though there were concerns on the amount used for the first phase, there is hope of a solid project going forward.

"We are happy that the national government has agreed to finance remaining parts of the stadium. We thank Sports Kenya for choosing Meru to host an international event," said Kiraitu.

Sports Kenya Chairman Fred Muteti said he asked the contractor to work round the clock to meet the tight deadlines. The CHAN tournaments will take place on January 12 to February 5 next year.
