A fire broke out at 2am last night at a school in Kibra Constituency, Nairobi razing down a dormitory.

It was earlier reported that 16 students at Moi Girls School were hospitalised as police initiated investigation to establish the cause of the fire.

According to Education Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i, seven students have been reported dead and 10 others are still in hospital.

Most of the fatalities occurred as a result of the stampede and the students jumping out of windows.

According to witnesses, rescue services got to the school after two hours.

One of the administrators at the institution pointed out that the affected dormitory had been occupied by Form One students.

Dr Matiang’i added that the school will be closed to allow students recover from shock.

"The school will remain closed for the next two weeks to allow the students to recover from the shock of the incident," he stated.

Matiang'i also sent condolences on behalf of President Uhuru Kenyatta adding that relevant authorities will establish the cause fire.

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko reiterated he will conduct an inspection of other private and public schools to ensure dormitories have enough fire exits.
