Compliance: Taxpayers have until midnight to update iTax details

iTax

Kenyans have until the end of August 31 to ensure that their details are accurately captured on the Kenya Revenue Authority’s online platform, iTax, or risk having their personal identification number (PIN) deactivated.

Operating without a PIN might lead to limited access to critical government services while companies that fail to regularise their filings by midnight could miss out on business opportunities.

The tax collector in early August gave millions of Kenyans, both individuals and businesses, till August 31 to migrate their PINs to iTax. Failing to do this will limit access to some government services that require one to have a PIN to transact, such as transfer of property.

Deactivation could have huge ramifications, with tax compliance being key across both the public and private sectors.

Clamp down

Through the move, KRA expects to clamp down on non-payment of taxes.

“KRA has noted that there are taxpayers who have not migrated their PINs into iTax while other taxpayers who are already in iTax are either not filing or those in active businesses are filing nil or no returns at all. In this regard, all PINs falling under these categories will be rendered inactive in the iTax platform,” said KRA in a notice earlier in the week.

“Taxpayers who have not filed any tax returns for the last three months will be considered as not trading and their PINs rendered inactive.”

It also said businesses that have been filing nil or no returns would also have their PINs rendered inactive.

A big proportion of individuals and businesses do not file returns while a substantial number of businesses fail to declare the actual amounts made and instead return a ‘nil’ income.
