Former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan has congratulated Uhuru Kenyatta on his re-election.

Mr Annan urged President Kenyatta to pursue efforts that would bring together all Kenyans and move the country forward.

He applauded Kenyatta on his victory speech in which he reached out to his rival - Raila Odinga - and called on all Kenyans to reconcile and embrace peace.

“I congratulate President Kenyatta on his re-election and his victory speech in which he reached out to his rival and called on all Kenyans to reconcile and embrace peace. I urge him to pursue these efforts to bring together all elements of Kenyan society to move the country forward,” Annan said.

He applauded Kenyans for their commitment to democracy, which they demonstrated “so enthusiastically” during the recent elections, by turning out in high numbers to vote.

“I congratulate the people of Kenya for turning out in large numbers to exercise their democratic right of voting and maintaining peace before and throughout the process,” said Annan.

Annan commended the National Super Alliance candidate Raila Odinga for conducting a peaceful electoral campaign and for being a strong defender of democracy.

He urged Raila and his fellow NASA principals to pursue their concerns over the electoral outcome through “the due process of the law and to put the interest of the nation first, as he has patriotically done on past”.
