GOOD FOR KENYA? National schools to admit day-scholars

The Ministry of Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi’s proposal to have the 103 National schools in the admit day scholars is not good for the country.

The CS while addressing the ongoing head teachers’ conference in Mombasa said the big schools ready to have day-class streams should make an application to the ministry, implying this was all set to be rolled out.

Whether it is equity or enhancement of access to the quality education associated with national school that the idea, it is ill advised and it should be quickly reconsidered.

According to the CS students who live near national schools and would wish to go home after the day’s classes would be allowed. This news should not reach our students in the prestigious schools because apparently the ministry is not aware of the young boys and girls always want to be at home.

It will be more prudent for the government to take the quality in the national schools to the day ones instead of making sections national school students and facilities have day classes.

Probably, there is inadequate understanding of the two different worlds a day scholar and a student boarding at a national school live and study in.

Being in school means the students concentrate on learning and have little or no access to destructors as the ills in the environment at home.

Having the suggestion implemented means students will peddle or sneak in drugs, mobile phones and such student unfriendly things that could threaten the state our children in the schools.

The tendencies and bad characters in a good number of day scholars we know of due to their exposure to the outside world should not be let to be passed on to national school students under the guise of education reforms.

This could ruin good students who stand a chance to transform the society.

Homes are not good learning environments and if there is something we should be working so hard to have is boarding facilities in all out schools form primary to secondary education.

Considering that the CS suggested that it is the students who wish to stay at their home that will be allowed to only be at school for classes, if implemented, the ministry will be is shock as students would make their parents acquire homes or rent houses for them near the schools.

For us to continue having schools as good as they have been or even better, it is good for us not to grant students what they wish, at least not on whether to remain in school or go home after day classes.

But this prevails over my thought, it will be good for investors who will flock the school’s surroundings to build superb residential areas and hostels near national schools and this will drug the hell in university hostels to the young kids.
