Karume strikes double at Standard golf tournament
It was double luck for John Karume as he shook the sponsor's hand twice during the Standard Golf Day at the par 72 Limuru Golf and Country Club over the weekend.
Karume, who has played golf for more than 25 years, won both the overall and nearest to the pin prizes. He landed his ball 1.3ft off the pin on the par 3 hole number 196 yards to clinch the nearest to the pin prize.
When the captain announced Mwangi Maina as the overall winner with a score of 40 (17+23) Stableford points, he wasn't in the clubhouse and, as per the house rules, he called for a redraw before handing Karume, who had 39 (18+21) Stableford points, the title.
"If you really want to know how I did it, just remember that I was born and bred in this cold place. I grew up here, so I am accustomed to this cold weather. I like playing under such cold conditions," said Karume.
Handicap 1 Dennis Maara emerged the Men's winner on a score of 37 (18+19) Stableford points, beating Jeff Macharia to the second spot with 37 (18+19) Stableford points.
Grace Kimeria won the Lady Winner's prize on a score 38 (18+20) Stableford points, edging out Wairimu Thande on 37 (18+19) Stableford points.
Brian Njoroge was the Junior winner with 32 (17+15) Stableford, while Golf Park Captain Willy Oroko won the Guest prize on a score of 39 (19+20) Stableford points.
Mose Sammy won the Staff prize on a score of 32 (12+20) Stableford points, while Jimmy Rwambo and Andrew Koech won the 1st and 2nd nine prizes on identical scores of 22 points.
John Kariuki drove his tee shot 80 yards short off the green at the par 4 hole number 9 to claim the men's Longest Drive prize, while I. Auma won the longest drive in the ladies' category after hitting 279 yard off the tee box.
Agnes Macharia won the Pinga Mingi/Best Effort prize with 5 Stableford points on both nines. [Mose Sammy]
