An attempt by a couple to secretly bury their eight-year-old child flopped after they were busted by neighbours.

In a shocking incident in Gitaro village, the family, "known for its strange religious beliefs", had already dug a grave to bury their son when neighbours stormed and stopped the rites.

The son, who had complained of a serious stomachache, had died minutes earlier and the family decided to bury him without informing other relatives, neighbours and authorities.

Even after being confronted by neighbours, the family declined to move the body to mortuary citing religious beliefs.

In a bid to cover up what they were upto, the boy's parents bought a coffin in Murang'a town and dug a grave ready for the burial.

Police from Kahuro police station were alerted and they stopped the burial. They collected the body and moved it to the morgue for a postmortem.
