State to employ 5,000 teachers, to report July 3

The Governments is recruiting 5,000 teachers who are expected to report in July.

Communication from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) said some 2,205 new teachers will be hired to teach in primary schools. Another 2,795 will teach in secondary schools and institutions such as teachers' training colleges.

This means that the teacher shortage number will come down to about 75,000 from the current 80,000. The recruitment will bring the total number of teachers to 310,000.

Teacher shortage

"Interested candidates should submit their applications to the respective county directors for primary schools and boards of management for post-primary institutions not later than June 14, 2017," said Nancy Macharia, the TSC chief executive officer.

The recruitment schedule showed that the successful teachers will report to their stations starting July 3.

County education directors will collect the applications by June 9 while applications from boards of management and county directors have been scheduled to be done by June 14.

The county selection process will take place by June 22. The TSC head office is expected to receive the application documents by June 23 and the vetting process will start the same day.

Vetting process

"Interested candidates should apply to the TSC county director in the region where a vacancy has been advertised attaching all relevant academic and professional certificates," said Ms Macharia, adding that all applications should be submitted through the respective TSC sub-county directors.

"Those who had applied earlier and were unsuccessful must apply afresh since a new merit list for the 2017/2018 financial year will be generated," she said.
