Spike of Academic Performance- campus relationships

Campus relationships are the main inhibitor of good academic performance which directly reflects the kind of incompetent employees we have in the private and public sectors thereby, deteriorating our economy.

Most campuses are jam-packed with students who have changed the focal purpose of being in the university to that of finding lovers and forgetting that they are meant to set a foundation for their future and enhancing the growth of their country.

The time consumed by these ‘love birds’ on irrelevant non-academic activities like clubbing, photo shoots and even raving is paid for at the end of academic year transcripts that reflect supplementaries and re-takes.

By the fact that most of these relationships in the campus are more of born out of fashion trends, desire and curiosity of experimenting new things especially to the naïve first-year students, end up not realizing the core purpose of relationships.

The core purpose of being in a relationship is to complement each other whenever the need arises and been there for each other at all times. Therefore, it is so unfortunate that comrades end up falling prey in relationship traps, which in most times end up being disastrous.

For instance, some years back at Masinde Muliro University, a female student found herself in the middle of a love triangle saga that resulted to her death and her body thrown in the sewage all in the name of university relationships. What if she could have concentrated on her studies that took her to campus, could she still be alive?

The practice of cohabiting among campus students is just but a result of the effects brought about by campus relationships. Parents sponsoring these students inevitably become sponsors of ‘marriages’ that they know not about.

It is high time that students understand to set boundaries between the right time to engage in relationships and their core purpose being on campus.

Students clubs’ that deal with social affairs in conjunction with the varsity administrations are supposed to strategise on how to help curb the occurrence and continuation of this behavior among students.
