A tonne of drugs with a street value of Sh5 million has been destroyed at Mayungu area.

The drugs were still lying in the Malindi law courts store long after the cases of the people who had been charged with trafficking them had been heard and the files closed.

According to the Malindi Anti-Drug Users Campaign chairman Famau Famau, the drugs - bhang, cocaine, heroin, and hashish - had been in the store for about five years and there were fears that corrupt court officials and police could sneak them out for sale on the streets after they had been used as exhibits.

Chief Magistrate Julie Oseko presided over the destruction of the drugs.
