The Mill-Hill Missionaries, an international fellowship of Catholic missionaries, founded St. Francis Rang’ala Girls High School in 1932 in Ugenya, Siaya County.

The school was however transformed into a women teachers training college — which was later moved to Asumbi in Homa Bay County.

It was not until 1961 that Rang’ala Girls School made a comeback, admitting its first batch of students. Today the school has a population of more than 2,000 students.

“KaSaints”, as the girls were known, had to shave their heads clean, almost to the scalp. Their brother school is Rang’ala Boys Secondary School, which they nicknamed Rang’ala Bee or “Kaholy”.

It was here at Rangs, as the school was nicknamed, that Mbita MP Millie Odhiambo served as dormitory prefect. Her life here was enthralled by rides on the “matchbox”, the canter school bus they later baptised Brother Francis. Lady Clare, the new school bus has since taken over.

The favourite meal here was meat. Thrilling days were Sundays — when RnB soothed and killed boredom. But this was not complete without hangouts at ‘jobless corner,’ ‘manhole’ and canteen areas.

Rangs slang goes thus; “Nani, tuende admin?” ‘’Kuna mass beating?’ “Kuna venye’’ “Naomba ashuu’’ and, ‘’Juu ya hiyo risto...”

Assembly got enthused when one of the Sisters went frenetic thus; “My dear girl... I will clap (sic) you. You should see me after this”.

Among those who donned green pullovers, skirts and white blouses include the Kenya Medical Women’s Association chairperson Dr Christine Sadia. She developed interest in scouting at Rangs and ended up being Chief Commissioner, Kenya Girl Guides Association.

Others who were guided by the “Discipline for Victory” motto include Roselida Ongare, lecturer at Kibabii University, Grace Ojuang, Business Development Manager at Mediamax Ltd and Pamela Mahila, a senior project adviser at GIZ, a German corporation.

Others are Rosebel Aloo, a procurement assistant at Guru Nanak Hospital and Brenda Orayo, HR Assistant at Tata Chemicals Magadi Limited.
