Bayern Munich v Real Madrid - last five ties

Bayern Munich host Real Madrid on Wednesday in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals.

AFP Sport looks at the last five European ties between the heavyweights:

Champions League semi-final, April 2014

First leg: Real Madrid 1 (Benzema 19) Bayern Munich 0

Second leg: Bayern Munich 0 Real Madrid 4 (Ramos 16, 20, Ronaldo 34, 90) - Real won 5-0 on aggregate.

Having narrowly lost the first leg in Madrid when Karim Benzema scored Real's winner, Bayern suffered their heaviest home defeat in Europe as Pep Guardiola's side were humiliated at the Allianz Arena.

Sergio Ramos and Cristiano Ronaldo both netted twice as Real reached the Champions League final for the first time in 12 years on their way to "La Decima" -- their 10th title.

Ramos struck with a pair of bullet headers to floor Bayern before Ronaldo seized the spotlight with a brace of his own. The Portugal star finished with a record 17 Champions League goals in the 2013/14 season.

Champions League semi-final, April 2012

First leg: Bayern Munich 2 (Ribery 17, Gomez 90) Real Madrid (Ozil 53)

Second leg: Real Madrid 2 (Ronaldo 6-pen, 14) Bayern Munich 1 (Robben 27-pen) - 3-3 on aggregate, Bayern won 3-1 on penalties

Mario Gomez scored a 90th-minute winner to give hosts Bayern a 2-1 first-leg advantage after Real's Mesut Ozil had cancelled out Franck Ribery's opener.

In the return at the Bernabeu, Bastian Schweinsteiger converted the winning spot-kick as the tie was decided by a penalty shoot-out with Manuel Neuer saving from both Ronaldo and Kaka.

Bayern's lead from the opening leg was quickly negated as Ronaldo netted twice in the opening 14 minutes, but a first-half Arjen Robben penalty ultimately took the tie to its dramatic conclusion.

Champions League last 16, February/March 2007

First leg: Real Madrid 3 (Raul 10, 28, Van Nistelrooy 34) Bayern Munich 2 (Lucio 23, Van Bommel 88)

Second leg: Bayern Munich 2 (Makaay 1, Lucio 66) Real Madrid 1 (Van Nistelrooy 83-pen) - 4-4 on aggregate, Bayern won on away goals

Raul Gonzalez struck twice in the first half at the Bernabeu, but Mark van Bommel's late effort revived the visitors' hopes as Bayern lost 3-2 in Madrid.

In the return leg, hosts Bayern made a lightning start with Roy Makaay scoring after just 11 seconds -- it remains the competition's fastest goal.

Lucio doubled Munich's lead in the second half and although Ruud van Nistelrooy converted a late penalty, Bayern went through on away goals.

Champions League last 16, February/March 2004

First leg: Bayern Munich 1 (Makaay 75) Real Madrid 1 (Roberto Carlos 83)

Second leg: Real Madrid 1 (Zidane 32) Bayern Munich 0 - Real won 2-1 on aggregate

It was honours even in the first leg at Munich's Olympiastadion as Makaay's second-half goal was cancelled out by a Roberto Carlos free-kick for Real's "Galacticos".

Real advanced after a 1-0 win in the return leg in Madrid, with current head coach Zinadine Zidane netting the decisive goal.

Real defender Michel Salgado played a key role, setting up Zidane for his goal on 32 minutes before clearing an effort by Claudio Pizarro, who is still playing for Werder Bremen.

Champions League quarter-final, April 2002

First leg: Bayern Munich 2 (Effenberg 82, Pizarro 88) Real Madrid 1 (Geremi 11)

Second leg: Real Madrid 2 (Ivan Helguera 59, Guti 85) Bayern Munich 0 - Real won 3-2 on aggregate

Eventual winners Real lost the first leg 2-1 in Munich despite taking an early lead through Cameroon international Geremi.

Bayern, who had won the 2001 final, roared back as Stefan Effenberg equalised late on before Pizarro hit the winner two minutes from time.

But Real knocked the reigning champions out with a 2-0 win in Madrid in a fiercely contested second leg.

Ivan Helguera and Guti scored second-half goals before Bayern's Hasan Salihamidzic was sent off in the closing seconds.
