April 2,2017  marked the second anniversary of the April 2, 2015 attack on Garissa University by Al Shabaab militias in which 142 students and six security personnel were killed.

The painful memories are still with us but Garissa town has picked up the pieces. For some time after the attack, Garissa was deserted, but life has returned to the town and Garissa University is once again operational.

The terrorists may have won a temporary victory, but the resilience of the Kenyan people is that they always bounce back to continue with their daily activities.

Yet we must remain cautious and alert to the threats that Al Shabaab poses.

The African Union Mission in Somalia troops and the Kenya Defence Forces may have severely limited the activities of the terrorists, but they are still fighting back.

Two attacks against Kenyan troops in Al Adde, Somalia, in January 2016, and another on a camp in Kulbiyow, Somalia, in January 2017 prove that the militias can still be lethal.

As questions remain as to whether it is worthwhile having KDF remain in Somalia, it is imperative to secure our borders to lock Al Shabaab terrorists out.
